CHERISH HARD

A Hard Play Novel by Nalini Singh

New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh kicks off her new Hard Play contemporary romance series with a sizzling story that’ll leave you smiling…

Sailor Bishop has only one goal for his future – to create a successful landscaping business. No distractions allowed. Then he comes face-to-face and lips-to-lips with a woman who blushes like an innocent… and kisses like pure sin.

Ísa Rain craves a man who will cherish her, aches to create a loving family of her own. Trading steamy kisses with a hot gardener in a parking lot? Not the way to true love. Then a deal with the devil (aka her CEO-mother) makes Ísa a corporate VP for the summer. Her main task? Working closely with a certain hot gardener.

And Sailor Bishop has wickedness on his mind.

As Ísa starts to fall for a man who makes her want to throttle and pounce on him at the same time, she knows she has to choose – play it safe and steady, or risk all her dreams and hope Sailor doesn’t destroy her heart.

☆☆☆☆☆☆

Excerpt

Fuming, Ísa made sure to set the alarm system and lock up. Everyone else was already well into their summer vacation—the sole reason Ísa was here was because she hadn’t been able to work on her lesson plans at home.

Her upstairs neighbor was having repairs done to her bathroom that required banging and hammering.

Not all of it involved nails and wood.

Hopefully the repairs would be finished by now. There was only so much ecstatic orgasmic screaming that a single woman in online-dating purgatory could stand without being driven to violence.

She spotted the tan-colored gardening truck the instant she came down the front steps of the school’s imposing redbrick main building and turned left to head toward her car. The hot gardener had parked it right next to her zippy blue compact. The front of the truck had four doors with tinted windows while the large bed was piled with shovels and other manly tools as well as a huge sack of clippings.

His light brown T-shirt was hanging over the top of the tailgate.

Which meant he was still walking around topless somewhere around here.

“Get in your car, Ísa,” she muttered to herself, well aware what would happen if she came face-to-face with that delicious hunk of manhood. Because while she might’ve conquered her shyness, she knew her limits.

Confronted by a bare-chested man who made her ovaries explode, she’d turn bright pink, lose her ability to form speech, and end of story. “Oh—”

She would’ve bounced off that sculpted chest if he hadn’t grabbed her by the hips.

“Hey, sorry,” he said with a startled smile that lit up the dazzling blue of his eyes. “I didn’t see you.”

“No, um, my fault.” It looked as if he’d crouched down to check one of his tires or something else but had risen to his feet right when she swung around to get into her car. And God, his skin was so hot and smooth and he was so tall and his shoulders were so broad and her mouth was drying up. The stuttering would begin at any moment.

The same stuttering Suzanne had mocked relentlessly when they were fourteen. Until Ísa had gone silent around everyone except the few friends she trusted. And now that horrible, ugly-hearted girl was getting married, having a baby, getting a happily-ever-after. Added to which, Ísa’s mother was jerking her on a string like she was a marionette, and her last “date” had asked her to call him Woofy and reward him with doggy biscuits.

The blue of the gardener’s eyes flickered with a hot flame.

And she thought… I know him. But before she could follow that faint thread, all the fury and hurt and frustration and sheer aggravation in Ísa ignited into an incandescent inferno.

She went mad.

Grabbing the hot gardener’s beautiful face in her hands, she said, “I want to kiss you.”

A wicked grin. “Go on ahead.”

And Ísa pressed her lips to his.

Silver Silence by Nalini Singh

silver-silence-186x300

Description: New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh returns to her extraordinary Psy-Changeling world with a story of wild passion and darkest betrayal…

Control. Precision. Family. These are the principles that drive Silver Mercant. At a time when the fledgling Trinity Accord seeks to unite a divided world, with Silver playing a crucial role as director of a worldwide emergency response network, wildness and chaos are the last things she needs in her life. But that’s exactly what Valentin Nikolaev, alpha of the StoneWater bears, brings with him.

Valentin has never met a more fascinating woman. Though Silver is ruled by Silence–her mind clear of all emotion–Valentin senses a whisper of fire around her. That’s what keeps him climbing apartment buildings to be near her. But when a shadow assassin almost succeeds in poisoning Silver, the stakes become deadly serious…and Silver finds herself in the heart of a powerful bear clan.

Her would-be assassin has no idea what their poison has unleashed…

Review:

To be honest, I read this book twice before writing my review. The first time I read it was solely for my own enjoyment. I absolutely adore everything Nalini Singh has ever written and this book is no exception! Silver Silence made me both chuckle and cry, and

Me with Nalini Singh when I was lucky enough to meet her in 2015.

by cry, I mean ugly sob for the second part of the book. I was afraid I was dehydrated by the time I finished this book. It was all I could have wanted for Silver’s book. Okay, enough gushing and on to the review!

Silver Mercant was introduced in the first half of the Psy-Changeling series. She was Kaleb Krychek’s personal assistant and her family is a Psy shadow power. In the later books, she heads up the EmNet which is a worldwide emergency response system. Needless to say, Silver’s a complete badass and alpha heroine! She needs a hero who can both appreciate her badassness and break through the shield of Silence surrounding her. Luckily the readers, Nalini Singh had the perfect hero up her sleeve. Valentin Nikolaev, the alpha of the StoneWater Bears. Yup, bears! Singh has moved away from her usual leopards and wolves to bring us to a new pack of bears! And the bears are freaking awesome. Like the SnowDancer wolves, the bears reside in the same housing complex, this time a cave. Silver is introduced to the world of the bears after being poisoned and needing a secure place to reside. Luckily for her, Valentin had his eye on Silver for a while now and was more than willing to offer her safe haven.

While a majority of the book focused on Silver and Valentin, Singh continued introduce the arc of the new series, Psy-Changeling Trinity, of which Silver Silence is the first book. Unlike her previous books, i.e. Slave to Sensation, Kiss of Snow, etc, these books have two word titles, singling the start of the new storyline. Silence and the Psy Council fell in the previous books and now a new world order is developing, complete with a new unknown villain. One of the storytelling techniques Singh excels at is keeping the reader engaged throughout a long series. While each of her books is standalone, apart from Allegiance of Honor, there is an overall storyline which ties them together. Silver Silence continues that new storyline as the stability of this new world is threaten by fringe groups as well as the Architect. I have my guess about how the Architect is but I have feeling we won’t find out for a while, especially considering how long it took us to find out who the Ghost was in the previous series.

As much as I admire Singh’s world shaping, my favorite part of this book is the relationship between Silver and Valentin. In this series, we’ve seen many examples of Pys’s breaking their Silence and forming relationships. However, Silver presented a new twist to this familiar story. She quickly gives in to Valentin’s playful seduction but her Silence is still necessary. She has a very different reason for needing to suppress her emotions and when she has to make that choice, my heart broke. Without spoilers, the depth of their relationship is severely tested and how Valentin deals with it shots him up to the top of my all-time favorite heroes list. He is so passionate and loving of Silver even when facing something which surely means his own heartbreak. I honestly have no words for the emotions I experienced reading their love story. It was just so beautiful.

I’m sure I’ve gushed enough over this book by now but I’d just like to throw out a few more things. There was a myriad of nicknames within this book, which some characters like Valentin having as many as four. While initially confusing, it actually proved to be very sweet once you realized they symbolized a special connection. I’m also hoping for a MM romance for Nalini Singh. There were hints of it in this book and maybe if we all wish hard enough, Nalini Singh will give us a novella with Silver’s brother, Arwen and Pavel, Valentin’s lieutenant. I want to end this review with saying that everyone should read this book!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars!

New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh continues her Rock Kiss series with a hot, sweet, emotional contemporary romance about love and forgiveness…

After a lifetime of longing for a real family, Sarah Smith thought she’d finally found her home with rock star Abe Bellamy, even if she knew Abe didn’t love her the way she loved him. But their brief relationship, filled with tragedy and heartache, nearly destroyed her. Alone, emotions in turmoil, and already shaky self-esteem shattered, Sarah struggles to pick up the pieces in the wake of their divorce.

Abe knows he’s to blame for the end of his marriage. Caught in a web of painful memories, he pushed away the best thing in his life – the sexy, smart woman he adores – breaking them both in the process. Then fate throws him a second chance to get things right, to prove to Sarah that she means everything to him. Abe desperately wants that second chance at love…even if he knows he doesn’t deserve it.

But can he convince Sarah – now strong and independent without him – to risk her wounded heart one more time?

Excerpt from ROCK WEDDING by

Nalini Singh

Plowing his gloved fists into the punching bag in front of him on the morning of the fourth day, Abe blocked out the other sounds in the gym and attempted to lose himself in the rhythm of the mindless action. It worked for about a minute before his mind filled with Sarah again. Her shy smile when he gave her a compliment. The way she’d sit curled up under his arm and read to him on lazy summer days.

Hard on the heels of that memory came one of him throwing her books in the pool in a drug-fueled rage. She’d been sobbing as she tried to save them.

“Fucking bastard,” Abe muttered, talking to his past self. He punched the bag so hard that it threatened to swing back right into his face. He didn’t care. He deserved to have his face beaten in.

Ripping off his gloves afterward, he showered, then went straight to a bookshop.

It was too little too late, but now that he’d remembered his asshole behavior, he couldn’t just leave it. Ball cap pulled low, he wandered the aisles… then realized most people here didn’t care who he was; they were more interested in the volumes that lined the shelves. He spent an hour inside the murmuring quiet of the store, searching for the titles he remembered seeing on their bedside table. She’d definitely read him Jane Austen.

He couldn’t remember which one though, so he bought the entire set.

And there was this one romance novel she loved and had read over and over again. He’d teased her it would fall apart in her hands one day. She’d just smiled and read him a paragraph that she’d told him was part of her favorite scene. What the hell had it been? Yes, that was it. In the end, it turned out the store didn’t have that book in stock, so he bought her a bunch of new releases featuring people with dogs or puppies on the covers. He definitely remembered seeing covers like that in their home

After spotting it in a display, he added in a nonfiction book about a woman who’d set up her own company while nearly flat broke and who was now a millionaire. At the counter, he paid extra to have the books wrapped up and packaged.

He’d called his car service earlier; the driver shot him a funny look when he put the package in the passenger seat and gave him Sarah’s address. “I’m a courier now?” the stocky middle-aged man asked, having worked long enough for Schoolboy Choir that he was a friend. They’d all missed his calm demeanor and total trustworthiness when he broke his leg recently and had been out for a while.

“Best in the business,” Abe responded.

The other man snorted. “I’ll get it to her now.”

Blowing out a breath after the gleaming black town car pulled away, Abe went to where he’d parked his SUV and got in. He didn’t want to go home to his empty house, but he didn’t want to barge in on his friends either. David and Thea, Noah and Kit, they needed time alone. As for Molly and Fox, while the newlyweds were back home after a short wedding trip, having postponed their honeymoon until later in the year, Abe wasn’t about to bust up their love nest.

Gabriel and Charlotte probably wouldn’t have minded the company since they’d been doing the sightseeing thing, but the other couple had flown back to New Zealand twenty-four hours earlier—after inviting all of them to their own wedding.

His phone buzzed right then.

Picking it up, he saw a message from Fox. Molly and I are at that Thai place with the noodles you like. We saved you a seat if you want to join us for lunch.

Damn, he loved his bandmates. On my way, he messaged back.

Starting the engine, he tried not to obsess over if Sarah would call him after receiving his long overdue gift. Hell, he’d be content with her throwing the books at his head. All he wanted was for her to talk to him, to let him show her he wasn’t that guy anymore, the one who’d destroyed them both.

Excerpt #2 from ROCK WEDDING by

Nalini Singh

Sarah sat on the floor of her living room, books spread out all around her.

Having worked nonstop for days, she’d given herself the afternoon off. First, she’d gone to see her son. The anniversary had rolled around again, and though she hurt, this month wasn’t one of the bad ones. She’d talked to him, told him about her day, left him with a kiss.

Her plan for the rest of the day had been to get into her pj’s and curl up on the couch with Flossie to binge-watch a favorite television series. Then had come the buzz at the gate that made her heart thunder and her skin flush… and the delivery of a most unexpected package.

I hope you’re doing okay today. Say hi to Aaron for me. I’m sorry I threw your books in the pool. I was a dick. – Abe

Sarah stared at the note card again, still not certain she was reading it right. The first two lines, they turned her throat thick, but the rest… He’d been so high that day that she’d have bet her business he had no memory of the ugly incident. Sarah had never forgotten it: she could still feel the wrenching ache of the sobs that had overwhelmed her as she tried futilely to fish out books that had been well and truly drenched.

Abe, meanwhile, had moved on to throwing the pool furniture into the shimmering blue water.

Her fingers trembled as she picked up a leather-bound copy of Jane Austen’s Persuasion. It matched the other Austen novels he’d sent her, the set a lovely reissue packaged for collectors. Beside the fancy collector’s editions lay cheerful paperbacks with laughing couples and/or dogs on the covers.

She stifled a wet laugh. He’d clearly chosen those at random, but it was cute that he’d remembered she liked romances with animals in them. Half the time when she’d read to him or talked to him about her favorites, she’d thought he was mostly asleep. It hadn’t mattered—she’d just liked being with him.

The most surprising book in the package was the one about the entrepreneur who’d gone from rags to riches on stubborn grit and sheer determination.

It gave her a funny, fluttery feeling in her tummy to realize Abe really did take her business endeavor seriously. It wasn’t mockery, not when he’d gone to the effort of choosing these other books with her likes specifically in mind. He’d thought she’d like the book because she was an entrepreneur too.

Her eyes burned.

Her hand went to her phone, but she hesitated, the memories of her awful loneliness while she’d been with Abe holding her in place. Curling her fingers into her palm, she picked up the television remote instead.

She had to keep her distance if she was to have any chance of protecting her battered heart. Because this Abe? The one who sent her flowers and books and who dropped by to make sure she was all right? He was more dangerous than the man who’d broken her to pieces.

Review:

I was so sad when I finished this book. I adore Nalini Singh and her Rock Kiss series is one of my favorite. As much as I loved Sarah and Abe, their happy ending also meant the end of the series. This book explored the ideas of forgiveness, loss, and second-chances. While at times, heartbreaking, Rock Wedding incorporated friendship and love mixed with some humor. Abe and Sarah both had past hurts they needed to overcome for their relationship to work a second time. While parts of this book broke my heart, I never doubted that Sarah and Abe would find their way back to each other. Once again, Nalini Singh has produced a book which highlights the power of love.

Allegiance of Honor

Allegiance of Honor by Nalini Singh

26089799Description: The “unparalleled romantic adventure”* of Nalini Singh’s New York Times bestselling series continues as a new dawn begins for the Psy-Changeling world…

The Psy-Changeling world has undergone a staggering transformation and now stands at a crossroads. The Trinity Accord promises a new era of cooperation between disparate races and groups. It is a beacon of hope held together by many hands: Old enemies. New allies. Wary loners.

But a century of distrust and suspicion can’t be so easily forgotten and threatens to shatter Trinity from within at any moment. As rival members vie for dominance, chaos and evil gather in the shadows and a kidnapped woman’s cry for help washes up in San Francisco, while the Consortium turns its murderous gaze toward a child who is the embodiment of change, of love, of piercing hope: A child who is both Psy…and changeling.

To find the lost, protect the vulnerable—and save Trinity—no one can stand alone. This is a time of loyalty across divisions, of bonds woven into the heart and the soul, of heroes known and unknown standing back to back and holding the line. But is an allegiance of honor even possible with traitors lurking in their midst?

Review:

I came really close to taking off work on the release day of Allegiance of Honor so I can stay home and read the book. However, I decided to be a responsible adult and go to work, though I did leave early to stop at my local Barnes and Noble and pick up the copy that I had on hold. Then I went home and devoured the book. My sister, who also reads the Psy-Changeling series, periodically poked her head in my room and told me to read faster. She usually reads the books after I finish them and she wanted to know how many pup-cubs! To prepare for this release, I’ve been listening to some Psy-Changeling audio-books on my commute to work and rereading some old favorites. That being said, after finishing this book, I’m determined to go back and reread the two books I usually skip over, Blaze of Memory and Bonds of Justice. Sophie and Max and Katya and Dev play a role in this book.

When I write my reviews, I think if I’d recommend this book to my friends who read romance novels. In this case, I would specify that I would tell any friend who has read the series to read this book. While any of the other Psy-Changeling books can be read as stand-alone, the full impact of this book would be dulled if you weren’t already familiar with the characters. If I had to pick a main couple for this book, and the couple I enjoyed the most, it would have to be Lucas and Sascha. I loved catching up with them and seeing how their life has changed three years after their book. Their daughter, Naya, is now a year old and we got to witness her first shift! Sascha and Lucas are both faced with trying to keep their daughter safe without putting limitations on her. For Sascha, it is accepting that her daughter is a cat and with that comes a feline curiosity and agility, which can be terrifying for a protective mother. Lucas, on the other hand, is less concerned about Naya’s agility but rather her overall safety as outside forces threaten Naya. The subplot running through the book centers on external threats to Naya as the first Psy-Changeling child born since Silence. This subplot connects to the new mysterious villain and arc of the series: the Architect and the Consortium. My sister and I have a myriad of theories about who the Architect is. After being oblivious to the identity of the Ghost in the previous books, we are determined to figure out who the Architect is in this new story arc.

What is amazing about this book is Nalini Singh’s ability to revisit old characters without stagnating the plot. I was a little concerned that this book was going to be a “where are they now?” book but the underlying plot was gripping and made the story flow. It was great to see how seamlessly the individual couples are linked in the stunning world Nalini Singh created. With a series as long as this one, it is easy for the books to become tiring and the story arcs dragged out; Nalini Singh did an excellent job of flowing from one story arc to a new one in a way that seems organic to the Psy-Changeling universe.  This book was everything I wanted and more. My only complaint is that I have to wait til August for the next anthology and then until next year for the next full-length Psy-Changeling book!

Tycoon

Tycoon by Joanna Shupe

TycoonDescription: Sometimes the journey is more pleasurable than the destination…

In Gilded Age New York City, the bachelors of the Knickerbocker Club spend their days rubbing elbows with Manhattan’s most elite citizens–and their nights with its most intoxicating women . . .

Standing on the platform at Grand Central Station, Ted Harper is surprised by a fiery kiss from an undeniably gorgeous damsel in distress. He’s certain she’s a swindler who’s only after his money, but he’s never met a woman so passionate and sure of herself. Disarmed, he invites her to spend the journey to St. Louis in his private car–perhaps against his better judgment . . .

Clara Dawson has long known how to take care of herself, but the savvy shop girl is at a loss when she witnesses–and becomes entangled in–a terrible crime. Desperation propels her into a stranger’s arms at the train station, but she hadn’t expected Ted to offer her the protection she so badly needs–nor did she expect their chemistry to develop more steam than the engine of the train. He’s everything she never thought she could have, and she’s everything he didn’t know he wanted. But as her secrets begin to unfurl, their fledgling romance could be in danger of derailing before they arrive at the next station . . .

Review:

Joanna Shupe has been a relatively new discovery for me, mostly because she’s a new writer. I discovered her books when she came to my local Barnes and Noble. I really liked her first trilogy, which was set in Regency England. However, her new series, The Knickerbocker Club, is set in the Gilded Age. I’m not usually the biggest fan of novellas. I tend to find them too short. Often times, the background of the main characters is not well fleshed out. My other issue is that the love story plot usually feels rushed, especially if there’s other plot points happening within the story. However, I do recommend Rock Courtship by Nalini Singh if you want a well-done novella. Okay, tangent over!

I really liked both of the characters in this book. Clara was interesting and determined to make an independent life for herself. When she gets pulled into a dangerous situation, she uses her brain and comes up with a solution. Ted Harper just happens to be at the right place at the right time and becomes that solution. He’s a self-made millionaire banker but Clara just thinks that’s he’s a bank employee and is unwilling to pull him into her problems. They fight their chemistry as well as dangerous outside forces. This novella is an excellent set up for the next book and I can’t wait to read what Joanna Shupe writes next!

rock redemption coverDescription: Kit Devigny could have loved rock guitarist Noah St. John. Their friendship burned with the promise of intense passion and searing tenderness…until the night Noah deliberately shattered her heart.

Noah knows he destroyed something precious the night he chose to betray Kit, but he’d rather she hate him than learn his darkest secret. All he has left is his music. It’s his saving grace, but it doesn’t silence the voices that keep him up at night. Chasing oblivion through endless one-night-stands, he earns a few hours’ sleep and his bad boy reputation.

When a media error sees Noah and Kit dubbed the new “it” couple, Kit discovers her chance at the role of a lifetime hinges on riding the media wave. Wanting—needing—to give Kit this, even if he can’t give her everything, Noah agrees to play the adoring boyfriend. Only the illusion is suddenly too real, too painful, too beautiful…and it may be too late for the redemption of Noah St. John.

Excerpt from ROCK REDEMPTION by Nalini Singh

Kit groaned at the sound of her phone. Reaching out blindly toward the nightstand, she hurled mental curses upon herself for forgetting to turn it off so she could catch some uninterrupted sleep before her four-a.m. makeup call.

It’d be fun and great for her career, her agent had said when recommending Kit take the superhero flick. Coming off two serious and emotionally wrenching projects, Kit had taken Harper’s advice and jumped on board the high-budget, high-octane venture. Unfortunately, Harper had forgotten to mention the four hours it would take to put her into the head-to-toe makeup required for the role. Daily.

“What?” she snarled into the phone without checking to see who it was.

“Hey, Katie.”

Every cell in her body snapped wide awake. Lifting her eyelids, she just stared at the ceiling through gritty eyes. Her heart thumped, her throat moving convulsively as she swallowed. She hated that he could still do this to her, hated it, but her visceral response to Noah wasn’t something she could stop. She knew because she’d tried for the past two years and three months.

“Noah,” she said flatly. “Do you know what time it is?”

“Two fifteen,” he answered.

Kit should’ve hung up. God, he’d hurt her. So much. But there was something in his voice that had her sitting up. “Are you drunk?” One thing she knew about Noah: no matter his bad-boy rep, he was never wasted. He might give a good indication of it, but look closely and those dark gray eyes were always sober.

“Probably.” A silence, followed by, “I just wanted to hear your voice. Sorry for waking you.”

“Wait,” she said when he would’ve hung up. “Where are you?”

“Some dive.” He took a deep breath, released it in a harsh exhale. “I’m sorry for being an asshole. I wanted to tell you that. I don’t want to go without saying that.”

“Noah,” she said, a horrible feeling in her stomach. “Where exactly are you?”

“The Blue Flamingo Inn off Hollywood Boulevard. Far, far, far off.” He laughed, and it held no humor. “It has a neon sign of a blue—surprise!—flamingo that’s flashing right through my window. Looks like someone stole the curtains.”

Having already grabbed her laptop, which she’d left beside the bed after answering some e-mails before sleep claimed her, she found the Blue Flamingo Inn. But Noah was already gone, having said, “I love your voice, Kit,” in an oddly raw tone before hanging up.

He didn’t pick up when she called back.

“Damn it! Damn it!” She shoved aside the blanket under which she’d been buried, having turned the AC to ice-cold as she usually did at night. Shivering, she tugged on a pair of jeans and an old sweatshirt over the panties and tank top in which she’d gone to sleep.

Pulling her black hair into a rough ponytail to keep it out of her eyes, she ran through the house, phone in one pocket, credit card and driver’s license in the other. In the kitchen, she grabbed her keys off the counter and shoved her feet into the tennis shoes by the door that led to the garage.

She was in her car and on the way to the motel three minutes after Noah had hung up, mouth dry and an ugliness in her gut. “Please be okay, please be okay, please be okay,” she kept saying, the mantra doing nothing to calm her down, but at least it kept her mind focused.

She wanted to call Molly and Fox, or the others in the band, but no one was currently in the city. Schoolboy Choir had completed the final show in the band’s hugely successful tour just over two weeks earlier. Day after that, they’d all gone their separate ways to recharge and regroup.

“Much as I love these guys,” David had said with a grin that reached the dark gold of his eyes, “I’ve been looking at their ugly mugs daily for months. We need to go blow off some steam separately before we start snarling at each other.”

At the time, Kit had nodded in understanding, having had that same experience while working on location for long periods. Tonight, however, she wished the others were all here, not scattered across the country, because something was very wrong with Noah.

“Noah doesn’t do drugs,” she told herself as she drove as fast as she dared, not wanting to risk getting pulled over and further delayed. “He isn’t the kind to—” She couldn’t say it, couldn’t even think of Noah ending his life. “No,” she said firmly, her hands white-knuckled on the steering wheel. “Noah isn’t like that.”

Review: I actually read this book twice before writing this review. The first time I read it, I rushed through, so anxious to read Noah and Kit’s story. Then, when I finished the book, I reread Rock Addiction and Rock Courtship. I was going to read Charlotte’s book but Schoolboy Choir isn’t really in that book so I decided to skip it. Once I finished Rock Courtship, I was ready to read Rock Redemption again. While I was still reading for plot, I also read with an attention to how Kit and Noah’s relationship developed and strengthened throughout the book. I honestly think this is one of my new favorite books. The depth of emotion Nalini Singh evokes through her writing is stunning.

The overarching theme of this book is in the title: redemption. In addition to being the theme, it is also the name of the movie Kit is auditioning for throughout the book. Redemption is obvious for Noah. He is trying to redeem himself in Kit’s eyes, is trying to overcoming the hurt he caused her in the past. Through redeeming himself to Kit, he also comes to terms with the horrors and the hurt of his past. She helps show him that he was not to blame for the abuse he suffered. Kit is also trying to redeem herself. While her emotional pain isn’t nearly as deep or strong as Noah’s, she still has demons she has to face. Her childhood left her unwilling to deeply trust people and when she first lets Noah in, he betrays that trust. Both personally and as a couple, Kit and Noah seek to find their inner peace and overcome their demons.

I love the relationship between Kit and Noah. Nalini Singh is excellent at introducing couples and having there be an immediate spark that grows throughout books (I’m looking at you, Hawke and Sienna). From the first book, it was clear that Kit and Noah were meant to be together. In their case, their romantic relationship grew out of their friendship. The trials that they went through to remain a couple, both from outside forces and internal, convince the reader that they are a couple that will last.  Kit had to make the choice to forgive Noah and risk her heart again. Noah knew he loved her but unable was to express it and let Kit see the wounded parts of him. However, their relationship became strong from the trials they faced.

The relationship between Kit and Noah was an emotional one. This book featured a slow build to an intimate relationship. This was in contrast to the first book in the series, Rock Addiction, whose couple started out with a one-night stand. Rock Addiction is steamy and highly sexual. However, the next books in the series, Rock Courtship in some part, and then Rock Hard and Rock Redemption, have a gradual move to sexual relationships. Main characters in both books, Charlotte and Noah, have hang-ups about sex. Rather, their relationships with their significant others grow before they are intimate. I do like the steaminess of Rock Addiction and how it works with Molly and Fox’s relationship. However, the plot for Rock Redemption definitely needs that slow build for Kit and Noah.

I wanted my final note to be about the relationship between the band members. Noah, Fox, David, and Abe are truly a family and it’s one of my favorite parts about this series. In this book, we got to see Fox support Noah and the entire band support Abe. This quote especially sums up the relationship between the band members. “Over a month they’d gone without playing a proper set, and now it felt like coming home. He caught Abe’s grin, heard the sheer joy in Fox’s voice, sensed it in the flourishes David threw into the beat, felt in the way his own fingers caressed the strings.”

I can’t wait to read the next book in the series but I’m a little sad it will be the last one for the band members. I do hold out hope for books about Gabriel Bishop’s brothers!

Favorite Quotes:

Kit was the only women who could make him bleed, make him beg.

“Just be my friend.” Laugh again with him, remind him that life wasn’t only nightmares and pain, make him feel as if he could be a better man if he tried hard enough.

There were some promises he simply couldn’t make, some promises he was too broken to keep.

Her tears were silent this time, the hot droplets erasing the last traces of the dream.

They’d never been meant to be just friends: they could be either passionate lovers or sworn enemies.

Careful, Kit. He’s not for you. She had to repeat that until it sank in, until she could look at Noah and not feel that hole inside her tear open all over again.

No tears this time, just a quiet and soul-deep grief.

The promises between them, it had been something most people never experienced. It was broken now, shattered so badly nothing could put it back together, but when it had been whole, it had been beyond beautiful, a priceless gift.

Noah could’ve been her heart.

And every beat of her heart, it whispered… be with me.

Complex, beautiful, talented man, she thought, her heart hurting. She loved him, but she knew he was broken. Perhaps permanently.

Shield of Winter

Shield of Winter by Nalini Singh

Shield of Winter (Psy-Changeling, #13)Description: Assassin.Soldier. Arrow. That is who Vasic is, who he will always be. His soul drenched in blood, his conscience heavy with the weight of all he’s done, he exists in the shadows, far from the hope his people can almost touch—if only they do not first drown in the murderous insanity of a lethal contagion. To stop the wave of death, Vasic must complete the simplest and most difficult mission of his life.

For if the Psy race is to survive, the empaths must wake…
Having rebuilt her life after medical “treatment” that violated her mind and sought to stifle her abilities, Ivy should have run from the black-clad Arrow with eyes of winter frost. But Ivy Jane has never done what she should. Now, she’ll fight for her people, and for this Arrow who stands as her living shield, yet believes he is beyond redemption. But as the world turns to screaming crimson, even Ivy’s fierce will may not be enough to save Vasic from the cold darkness…

Review: The 13th installment in Nalini Singh’s Psy-Changeling Series follows the mysterious teleporter Arrow, Vasic and his relationship with empath, Ivy Jane. It was nice to return to an empath psy. While we were introduced to empaths in the first book, Slave to Sensation, with Sascha Duncan, much was still unknown about the hidden designation “E”. In this book, the death of the Psy-Net has begun to speed up and Kaleb Krychek, the ruler of the Net, is attempting to find ways to save it. He enlists the Arrow Squad to protect a group of empaths in their experimental battle against the disease poisoning the net. Aden, the leader of the Arrows, places the protection of the empaths in the hands of his best friend, Vasic. As Vasic and Ivy Jane, one of the empaths, work to discover a way to combat the sickness of the Net, they begin to form an unbreakable bond, one which is threatened by Vasic’s attempted self-destruction.

Arrows & Empaths- I loved seeing the relationships bloomed between Arrows and empaths, especially Jaya and Abbott. I never would have expected peaceful empaths and Arrows to get along so well. And yet, the more I think about it, the more sense it makes. I totally love that the empaths are the secret to saving the Psy-Net and it was great to see more into their designation. I also liked the glimpses we get into the Arrows, which sets up for Aden’s book.

Vasic & Ivy- I loved Vasic and Ivy Jane as a couple! Watching their relationship blossom, even in the midst of the Psy-Net turmoil and violence, acted as great counterpoint to the story-arc Nalini Singh has taken the series. It becomes clearly early in the book that only empath can break through the shields, the guilt, and the self-destruction which surround Vasic. And the protectiveness of Ivy which Vasic displays is keeping with Singh’s alpha heroes- all of whom I love! I especially loved, and cried over, the parts of the book with Zie Zen and his Sunny. 😥

Vasic & Aden – I just wanted to include a shout-out to one of the series’ best friendships! Nalini Singh describes their relationship best: “To Vasic, Aden had helped him stay sane. To Aden, Vasic had helped him stay upright when he would’ve fallen. One lost boy helping another.”

Favorite Quotes:

“You’re my hope, Ivy, my beacon home on the darkest night.”

“He has a heart so huge, it’s kept pumping, kept going long past endurance—even though life has bruised it to a pulp.”

“We all have to live with our past, but it doesn’t have to define us.”

“It was too late the first day we met. You’re inside me, and I ‘m inside you. It’s done.”

“There’s a kind of secrecy in the world at this time of night, as if I’m allowed to see mysteries hidden in daylight.”

Top Ten Books That Made Me Cry

toptentuesday

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week they post a new Top Ten list and everyone is welcome to join. This week’s theme is a freebie so I decided to do “Top Ten Books That Made Me Cry”. I’m one of those people who adores books that make me cry so I figured, why not.

  1. Midnight Pleasures by Eloisa James Midnight Pleasures (Pleasures, #2)

This book makes me sob. Not just cry. Sob. I’m actually not the biggest fan of this book’s plot but whenever I pick it up, I know the emotions I will get from it and that’s why I keep coming back to it.

  2. Secret Diaries of Miss Miranda Cheever by Julia QuinnThe Secret Diaries of Miss Miranda Cheever (Bevelstoke, #1)

This is one of my favorite Julia Quinn books. I think that’s because most of her books are so happy that I was knocked off my feet by the emotions in this one. Case in point, my other favorite Julia Quinn is Romancing Mister Bridgerton, which has similar themes but leaves me grinning the entire book.

  3. The Bollywood Bride by Sonali DevThe Bollywood Bride

I just read this book recently and I’m pretty sure I sobbed from start to finish.

  4. Dream a  Little Dream by Susan Elizabeth PhillipsDream a Little Dream (Chicago Stars, #4)

A lot of Susan Elizabeth Phillips books make me cry but I decided to include the two that make me cry the most.

  5. Kiss An Angel by Susan Elizabeth Phillips Kiss an Angel

  6. Styxx by Sherrilyn KenyonStyxx (Dark-Hunter, #12)

Oh god. There aren’t words for how much this book makes me cry. It doesn’t matter what I’m in the middle of doing, just the thought of the scene where Styxx is poisoned and dreaming of Bethany and their son. I’m tearing up right now just typing that.

  7. Acheron by Sherrilyn KenyonAcheron (Dark-Hunter, #8)

I’m still emotionally scarred from that book.

  8. Blue-Eyed Devil by Lisa KleypasBlue-Eyed Devil (Travises, #2)

This is my favorite Lisa Kleypas book and I cry through the first 100 pages over what Haven has to suffer through.

  9. Enslaved by Virginia Henley Enslaved

The scene in the arena where Marcus has to send Diana back. Sobs.

  10. Heart of Obsidian by Nalini SinghHeart of Obsidian (Psy-Changeling, #12)

This book tore my heart out and then pieced it back together.
